Colee Hammock
By Beth Daly, Realtor®
Conveniently located in southeastern Fort Lauderdale, just east of US 1 south of Broward Boulevard, Colee Hammock is less than 1 mile from the beautiful beaches at Las Olas Boulevard. Residents are able to live “an urban lifestyle” in this neighborhood as all necessities are within walking distance or a short bike or cab ride away.
Colee Hammock is a charming and eclectic, historical residential neighborhood in the Downtown/Las Olas, area of Fort Lauderdale. A little less than 1/3 of a mile in area; Colee Hammock is nestled into a thick canopy of beautiful, mature trees and lushly landscaped, little streets. Adjacent to the vibrant Las Olas Boulevard area and downtown Fort Lauderdale with its world class restaurants, nightly entertainment, sidewalk cafes, art shows and so much more, this is a fantastic place to live. Colee Hammock is undoubtedly one of the most "pedestrian friendly" enclaves in Fort Lauderdale, with a fantastic "walkability" factor.
We can thank Mary Brickell for Colee Hammock. Mary bought the land in 1916 and named it after an engineer who was working for her; James Louis Colee. Mary's vision was an upscale neighborhood stretching from what is now Broward Boulevard to the river between the Sospiro and Himmarshee Canals. Mary had to defend her vision for Fort Lauderdale when Henry Flagler came along and wanted to run his railway in a straight line from Miami to West Palm Beach. Mary insisted that he run it west of her location on the river. This explains why Dixie Highway dips and curves west in the area.
Although Colee Hammock was largely developed during the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s most of the homes have been tastefully updated, some completely razed and reconstructed to suit the new owners. You will find an interesting mix of architectural styles ranging from Spanish Mission Style to Mission Revival to Cottage, Ranch and Mediterranean to Art Deco/Modern. The Colee Hammock Homeowner’s Association is very active in standing their ground to preserve the charm, historical nature and significance of the area’s homes and surroundings.
